FAQs

What kind of editing do you do?

My aim is to ensure the style of your writing is consistent and that the text flows organically from one sentence to the next. As I edit, I will check the work for proper grammar, punctuation, and continuity. If you like, I will also provide suggestions on how to best convey your message. In addition to content editing, I can also act as a fact-checker for both fiction and non-fiction works.

Why do I need an editor?

Your words are an impression of you. I will make sure your work is as clear and understandable as possible. Together, we can ensure the reader will not get lost in extraneous detail, or bogged down by poorly-structured phrases. In some cases, I can also help research a topic and vet potential sources.

What is the process like?

First, I will determine what level of editing you require by discussing your needs with you. Then, I will do an initial read-through of your work and map out a plan for completing the editing process. Next—depending on your preference—I will make edits to the document itself or add comments to your document (or a separate document) about my suggested edits.

What is your stance on the Oxford Comma?

I am generally in favor of the Oxford Comma. It is efficient, offers clarity, and alleviates confusion. While it is not favored by a number of news outlets, I tend to agree with the Associated Press which has noted, “if omitting a comma could lead to confusion or misinterpretation, then use the comma.” That said, if you prefer not to use it, I am happy to oblige.

Can I supply my own style guide?

Absolutely! I am happy to apply general editing concepts such as serial commas, bullet list preferences, date specifications, titles, and the like. I can also ensure correct spelling and capitalization of trademarked names if you provide me with a list.

What types of documents do you edit?

Great question! The list of documents that I have edited is long and continues to grow. I have experience editing fiction, non-fiction, guide books, cookbooks, articles, resumes, letters, legal documents, contracts, web pages, business plans, event posters, emails, medical brochures, and various marketing materials. If what you have is not on the list, just ask!
